5 Steps to Flawless Lashes: Say Goodbye to Mascara Clumps!

Tired of clumpy, spider-like lashes ruining your eye makeup look? Achieving flawless, separated lashes is easier than you think. With a few simple steps and the right techniques, you can say goodbye to mascara clumps for good.

Step 1: Start with Clean, Product-Free Lashes

The foundation for clump-free lashes is a clean slate. Before applying mascara, make sure your eyelashes are completely free of any residual makeup, oil, or skincare products. Even a tiny bit of leftover product can make mascara stick and clump. Use an oil-free eye makeup remover to gently cleanse your lashes, then allow them to air dry completely.

Step 2: Curl Your Lashes for Lift and Separation

Curling your lashes before applying mascara not only gives them a beautiful lift but also helps to separate them naturally. Use a good quality eyelash curler and gently clamp down at the base of your lashes, holding for a few seconds. Then, move the curler to the middle of your lashes and gently clamp again, and finally to the tips. This three-point curl creates a natural-looking curve and ensures each lash stands individually.

Step 3: Wipe Off Excess Mascara from the Wand

This is perhaps the most crucial step in preventing clumps. Many people pull the wand directly from the tube and apply, but this often leads to too much product on the brush. Before applying, gently wipe any excess mascara off the wand using the rim of the mascara tube or a tissue. You want just enough product to coat the lashes, not overload them. Think of it like a painting brush – you don’t want a blob of paint, just enough to create a smooth stroke. We highly recommend Mommy Makeup’s Lash Shield Waterproofing Top Coat for Mascara & Brows to use this transparent top coat over mascara and brows to lock in hours of wearability.

Step 4: Wiggle and Zig-Zag from Root to Tip

Instead of just swiping the mascara on, use a wiggle and zig-zag motion from the base of your lashes to the tips. Place the wand at the very root of your upper lashes and gently wiggle it back and forth as you pull it upwards. This technique helps to coat every lash evenly and lifts them at the root, preventing them from sticking together. For your bottom lashes, hold the wand vertically and gently sweep across to define them without clumping.

Step 5: Use a Clean Spoolie or Lash Comb to Separate

Even with careful application, a few lashes might still stick together. This is where a clean spoolie brush (like the ones found on the end of eyebrow pencils) or a metal lash comb comes in handy. You can use Mommy Makeup’s Dual Brow Brush, an efficient brush which is easy to use and cleans easily.  While your mascara is still slightly wet (but not gooey), gently comb through your lashes to separate any that have clumped together. This final step ensures each lash is perfectly defined and separated, giving you that coveted flawless look.

By following these five simple steps, you can achieve beautiful, clump-free lashes every time. Give it a try and see the difference!
